Can anyone help me find information on how a person gets a "cruising permit" to bring a foreign registered Yacht into both Canada and the USA? Any help would be appreciated. I am exploring the purchase of a foreign registered (non-US and non-Canadian) Hatteras but would want to be able to bring it into Canada for between 12 and 16 months at a time, then into the US for up to 12 months and then back into the Islands.
I didn't realize there was such a thing as a "crusing permit" to operate in Canadian waters, but then again, I've never done it.
I would think that all you would need to do would be to contact Canadian customs upon entry and maybe fly a quarantine flag while there. I don't know what you would get into with time limits, but I'm thinking the Bahamas will allow around six months.
If you keep the boat in the U. S., then USCG documentation would probably be in order. I don't know what the Canadian equivalent is, but I would assume they have some sort of federal registration program.
